Make: Alceste Bulfari

Story: Contemporary Italian luthier Alceste Bulfari is renowned for crafting visually striking instruments with rich tonal character and exceptional quality. After training and teaching at the International Violin Making School of Cremona, he resigned from his position in 1979 to establish his own workshop in an ex-Franciscan Convent in Castelleone, Cremona. Bulfari brings a rich heritage of craftsmanship and traditional techniques to his work, maintaining a dedicated interest in exploring acoustics and varnish.

Tone and Character: The Alceste Bulfari 1994 violin is distinguished by its complex, resonant tone with clear projection and rich harmonic overtones. It offers warmth and power across its entire range, accompanied by exceptional clarity and vibrant projection. This instrument is highly sensitive and responsive, presenting a wide spectrum of tonal colors. It is beautifully balanced yet preserves the distinctive tonal qualities required of each string, from a robust, velvety Sul G to a lustrous soaring E string melody.

Overview: The Alceste Bulfari 1994 violin embodies the synthesis of Italian craftsmanship and contemporary artistry. Bulfari’s unique overlay of red toned varnish atop a standard golden base facilitates a natural, rich antiquing as the instrument ages. With its complex tone and elegant aesthetics, this instrument will perform exceptionally well in a variety of professional settings.

Condition: This instrument is in excellent condition. The deep red varnish has a slight antiquing on the upper right bout with an otherwise near flawless original finish.

First Impressions

We stopped here to see about getting an upgraded violin for my son going into HS orchestra. First impressions are valuable and we were impressed! The shop itself is like a European violin shop - it has that small, warm, well kept old world vibe. It belongs on a small, off the main path cobbled street with a coffee shop next door. It even has its own workshop for working on instruments.
