Maker  Dereck Coons

Story
Dereck Coons is an accomplished luthier with over 20 years of experience crafting and restoring fine violins and cellos. Trained at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, he refined his craft through apprenticeships and international collaborations before returning to co-found Violin Shop Tampa in 2013. Through the years he has worked and collaborated with many world-class musicians, gaining a deep understanding of performers' needs. Guided by a philosophy that celebrates the individuality of each musician, Coons creates beautifully crafted instruments that reflect the unique voice and artistry of their players.

Tone and Character
The Dereck Coons Francesco Rugeri Antiqued violin is defined by its open, resonant tone, which balances mellow warmth in the lower register with a luminous, silvery brilliance in the upper range. A subtle, dark core enriches the sound, complementing the vibrant, ringing overtones. The low end surprises with its richness and expansiveness, while the instrument truly excels in higher positions, maintaining exceptional clarity and overtone presence across all strings.

Overview Description
The Dereck Coons Francesco Rugeri Antiqued violin is uniquely elegant in both tone and craftsmanship. Its crisp, precisely executed purfling is beautifully framed by a subtle amber varnish, accentuating the fine details of the tight-grain spruce. The richly antiqued back showcases beautifully variegated maple flaming beneath a refined ebony crown. Balancing delicacy and character, this instrument delivers a distinctive tonal and visual performance.

TESTIMONIALS

First Violin Purchase

Purchasing a new violin (or any quality string instrument) is an important investment that can be exciting yet pricey and challenging. In my case, I was a bit nervous because this was my first such purchase. From my several phone calls to today's visit to Violin Shop Tampa, I felt like everyone was dedicated to my needs and happiness. They listened attentively and worked hard to help me in every way. I learned that each team member is formally educated and quite experienced, including a number of professional, working musicians. I was in excellent hands.

First Impressions

We stopped here to see about getting an upgraded violin for my son going into HS orchestra. First impressions are valuable and we were impressed! The shop itself is like a European violin shop - it has that small, warm, well kept old world vibe. It belongs on a small, off the main path cobbled street with a coffee shop next door. It even has its own workshop for working on instruments.
