Story: Dereck Coons is an American contemporary luthier with over two decades of experience, currently based in Kentucky and formerly co-founder of Violin Shop Tampa. His journey began in 1996 at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he studied under Thomas Sparks and trained in classical guitar—laying a strong foundation in tonal understanding. He later apprenticed with master luthier Al Stancel at Casa del Sol Violin Shop and managed a violin shop in the UK for seven years. In 2013, Coons returned to Tampa to co-found Violin Shop Tampa, where he developed instruments, rental programs, and custom setups in collaboration with professional musicians. His work was recognized with a Certificate of Merit for Tone at the 2022 VSA International Violin Making Competition. Today, Coons continues his craft at Old Town Violins in Kentucky, devoting himself to the artistry of violin making.
