Maker: Kurt Gütter

Story: Kurt Arno Gütter was a respected German violin maker from Markneukirchen, widely regarded as one of the best luthiers from the region. Known for his exceptional craftsmanship and tonal quality, Gütter apprenticed and worked with master luthiers Oskar Bernhard Heinel and Heinrich Theodor Heberlein before opening his own workshop in 1921. Influenced greatly by Stradivari, his violins are celebrated for their rich sound and precise construction.

Tone and Character: This violin offers a clear, focused tone with a direct resonance that provides both power and projection. Bright overtones bring each note to life, while the roundness of the core adds warmth and depth. Well-balanced and responsive, the instrument delivers a versatile spectrum of tonal colors and dynamics across the range and fingerboard.

Overview: The Kurt Gütter Markneukirchen Violin 1927 reflects the rich sound and skillful craftsmanship for which his instruments are known. A tastefully layered amber varnish highlights the elegantly flamed maple back, framed by precise purfling. Clear and responsive, it is ideal for musicians seeking both versatility and expressive richness in their sound. This instrument is branded K.A. Gütter above the inside label.

Condition: This violin is in excellent condition. Naturally occurring antiquing of the varnish is visible on the upper right rib, along with some aesthetic wear on the corners.

First Impressions

We stopped here to see about getting an upgraded violin for my son going into HS orchestra. First impressions are valuable and we were impressed! The shop itself is like a European violin shop - it has that small, warm, well kept old world vibe. It belongs on a small, off the main path cobbled street with a coffee shop next door. It even has its own workshop for working on instruments.
