Mateo Bruni Viola 16.5” 1949

Maker: Mateo Bruni

Story: Mateo Bruni (1884–1964) was an Italian-trained luthier of the Sgarabotto and Pollastri tradition who later became an influential figure in Buenos Aires. After early work in Italy, including responsibility within Capalbo’s workshop at a young age, he relocated to Argentina where he established his own shop and trained a new generation of makers. His work and reputation were recognized internationally, including awards at the 1949 Cremona Exhibition. Bruni represents an important link between the Italian classical school and the development of 20th-century Argentine violin making.

Tone and Character: This viola offers a broad, open voice with a smooth and silky core that remains consistent under a wide range of bow pressure. It responds effortlessly to changes in articulation, allowing the player to shape phrases with precision and ease. The sound is rich and complex, offering a wide palette of tonal colors that support both subtle nuance and bold expression. Across all registers, the instrument maintains clarity and balance, with a resonant lower range and a focused, singing upper register. The viola projects with authority, carrying clearly through an ensemble or performance space without losing warmth. This is a viola that not only supports the player’s musical intentions but elevates them, making it an excellent choice for those seeking both depth and presence in their sound.
