Maker: Alceste Bulfari

Story: Contemporary Italian luthier Alceste Bulfari is renowned for crafting visually striking instruments with rich tonal character and exceptional quality. After training and teaching at the International Violin Making School of Cremona, he resigned from his position in 1979 to establish his own workshop in an ex-Franciscan Convent in Castelleone, Cremona. Bulfari brings a rich heritage of craftsmanship and traditional techniques to his work, maintaining a dedicated interest in exploring acoustics and varnish.

Tone and Character: The Alceste Bulfari 1989 violin delivers a direct, powerful tone with vibrant projection. Its focused clarity and bright harmonics add sparkle to the rich core, while maintaining a tasteful sympathetic resonance. The instrument offers exceptional clarity and responsiveness across the entire fingerboard, with active resonance up each string. Exceptionally balanced, the violin’s core tonal character offers versatility from sparkling brightness to deeper, richer warmth across a broad dynamic range.

Overview: The Alceste Bulfari 1989 violin embodies the synthesis of Italian craftsmanship and contemporary artistry. It features a rich amber-red varnish with exceptionally precise purfling and sharp clean corners. The beautiful one-piece back stands out with a unique figured maple wood grain that extends to the ribs. With its complex tone and elegant aesthetics, this instrument will perform exceptionally well in a variety of professional settings.

Condition: This instrument is in mint condition.

First Impressions

We stopped here to see about getting an upgraded violin for my son going into HS orchestra. First impressions are valuable and we were impressed! The shop itself is like a European violin shop - it has that small, warm, well kept old world vibe. It belongs on a small, off the main path cobbled street with a coffee shop next door. It even has its own workshop for working on instruments.
